Emma Bird is a Liverpool-based theatre professional with a dynamic career spanning over 30 years in stage, screen, and improvisation.
She began her acting journey alongside Pete Postlethwaite in the BBC drama Needle, later becoming a household name as Maxine Price in Casualty.
Her film credits include Seventeen (with Rachel Weisz) and The Governess (with Minnie Driver), while her theatre work has seen her shine in The Good Hope (National Theatre), Educating Rita, Oleanna, and Death & the Maiden.
Emma’s directorial work is bold, human, comedic and emotionally rich. She currently directs commercially successful productions at Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre, including Bingo Star (2023), Haunted Scouse (2024), The Peaceful Hour (2025), The Peaceful Hour 2 (opens 2026). Having directed nearly 30 productions over her career, she cut her teeth directing award-winning productions at major UK Fringe festivals.
Emma is the successful founder of Liverpool Comedy Improv (since 2015), which is now a hub for improvisation in the North West. As an improv teacher, she brings world-class training into accessible, high-impact workshops.
Emma holds an MA in Applied Theatre (CSSD), a PGCE in Drama, and a First-Class BA in English & Philosophy. She delivers training for theatres, schools, universities, businesses, and the NHS - bridging creativity, communication, and wellbeing.
